Poultry Case Story-Aug.’20-Boipariguda

Gayatri Harijan, a 25 year old woman, lives with her 5 member family in Jantaguda village of Boipariguda Block of Koraput District. Gayatri Harijan’s mother in law is a member of Maa Santoshi SHG. Though the SHG was formed in 2013 it was almost defunct within three years and then reactivated and adopted in July 2017 by Harsha Trust EYF project. Her family has no agriculture land; she has taken 1 acre land on lease to grow paddy. The house she and her family now reside in is also not their own and was given to the family by one of the SHG members of the village. Her family basically depends on daily wage labour apart from share cropping.

The family income was a meagre Rs.20, 000 to 25,000/- in a year from the agriculture & wage labour. Income out of these were insufficient and the family was not even food secure When Harsha Trust started working in Gayatri’s village a training on livestock rearing was given as a regular activity apart from institutional strengthening. When her mother in law heard from the Prani Mitra about the benefits of Desi (country bird) rearing, she showed interested. She encouraged Gayatri to take charge & responsibility and lead the enterprise. Gayatri accessed the loan taken by her mother-in-law amounting to Rs. 5000/- from her SHG. She started the enterprise by purchasing 10 Desi birds.

Radhamadaba CLF has decided to submit her proposal to the Block Administration so that at least one entrepreneur can be developed as a model for other SHG members. Her aim is to make a good house and educate her children.
